An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current.[2] For reasons of cost and simplicity, most alternators use a rotating magnetic field with a stationary armature.[3] Occasionally, a linear alternator or a rotating armature with a stationary magnetic field is used. In principle, any AC electrical generator can be called an alternator, but usually, the term refers to small rotating machines driven by automotive and other internal combustion engines.

An alternator that uses a permanent magnet for its magnetic field is called a magneto. Alternators in power stations driven by steam turbines are called turbo-alternators. A starter (also self-starter, cranking motor, or starter motor) is a device used to rotate (crank) an internal-combustion engine so as to initiate the engine's operation under its own power. Starters can be electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic. The starter can also be another internal-combustion engine in the case, for instance, of very large engines, or diesel engines in agricultural or excavation applications.[1]

Internal combustion engines are feedback systems, which, once started, rely on the inertia from each cycle to initiate the next cycle. In a four-stroke engine, the third stroke releases energy from the fuel, powering the fourth (exhaust) stroke and also the first two (intake, compression) strokes of the next cycle, as well as powering the engine's external load. To start the first cycle at the beginning of any particular session, the first two strokes must be powered in some other way than from the engine itself. Put simply, a fuel pump is an integral part of your vehicle's fuel system responsible for transferring the gasoline from the gas tank to the engine. This transfer of fuel allows the engine to be able to power up and run. In modern vehicles with internal combustion engines, there are two main types of fuel pumps: mechanical and electric. 

Fuel pumps have been around since the early days of automobiles. The first type of fuel pump was a mechanical fuel pump, which uses an internal spring-loaded diaphragm to pump gasoline from the tank to the engine. These were standard for many years but were eventually overtaken by electric fuel pumps in the 30s and 40s due to their ability to provide more efficient fuel delivery at a lower cost. 

Today, both electric and mechanical fuel pumps are still used in most cars and trucks, although the majority of vehicles now use electric fuel pumps due to their efficiency and economy.
